A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth to restore its strength, function, and appearance. They fit over teeth or implants, or can be inlayed within natural teeth. They are used in various situations and often are used following root canal therapy, where crowns are used to protect the remaining tooth and provide function. They are also used to cover teeth with large fillings if the tooth structure has weakened.

Additionally, the teeth next to bridgework may be crowned to provide structural support at attachment points. Lastly, a crown may be used with an implant to replace a lost tooth. Permanent crowns can be made from metals (such as gold), porcelain, or ceramic.

Here at Stillwater Dental we have a few innovative solutions for crowns. As patients dental needs are very different, the crown procedure always begins with an examination and subsequent discussion with your dentist about your specific dental needs.

Does Your Tooth Need A Crown?

A dental crown may be needed for the following reasons:
  • To protect a weakened tooth from breaking or stabilize a cracked tooth.
  • To restore a broken or worn tooth.
  • To fill a large filling (sometimes called an inlay).
  • To hold a bridge in place.
  • To cover a misshapen or discolored tooth.
  • To cover an implant.
  • To make a cosmetic modification.

CEREC Crowns

CEREC crowns offer many benefits to Stillwater Dental patients. Through the use of CAD-CAM technology, we are able to design and mill your metal-free, biocompatible ceramic crown in one visit. With no impressions, no temporary crowns, & no long waiting periods between visits, your tooth restoration can be designed & completed in just one appointment.

After removing the decayed or defective portion of your tooth, a CEREC camera is used to create a 3D image of your tooth. Through computer assisted technology, you’ll watch as your dentist designs your crown in just minutes. It is then sent to one of our in-house milling machines where your tooth restoration is milled out of a solid ceramic block chosen to match your own tooth coloration perfectly. It is then bonded directly to your tooth.
